Top 3 Tips for Offshore PHP Development

PHP is one of the most widely used programming languages for web development. As a server-side scripted language, it is easily embedded into HTML. The versatility of PHP allows you to build and create websites, e-commerce stores and portals very quickly. As PHP is an open-source technology it is attractive to companies and developers who are looking to keep down development costs. Another way to reduce costs is by hiring offshore PHP development programmers from countries in Eastern Europe, India and others. You can cut staffing costs by 40% or more but if you’re not careful the project management and work submitted may cause more headaches than you imagined. Here are three top tips to consider when considering offshore PHP web development.

#1 Decide On A PHP Freelancer or Company

If you’ve decided to go down the offshore PHP development road you have two options. You can either hire an individual PHP developer or contract the work to a company to supply the programmer. Choosing an individual may work out cheaper initially but there are several disadvantages. He or she may become ill, or disappear or simply not be able to finish the work on time to the necessary standard. In a worst-case scenario, you may lose all or part of your money and receive little in return. Choosing to go with a reputable development company may cost more but provides better security. By signing a legal contract you get more chance of a finished project on budget. The company will be responsible for the developer and can change them if things are going wrong. A sizeable software development business will provide additional benefits like a stable infrastructure and industry-standard development processes.

#2 Investigate PHP Skills And Certifications

Whether you hire a software company or a PHP freelancer take some steps to research their abilities in PHP website development. Check out any certifications on freelance portals or ask for them directly. Prepare interview questions based on your requirements and grill them thoroughly in a technical interview. If you choose an offshore PHP development company ask about their team of PHP developers and their procedures if there are problems with the staff, project timescales or costs.

#3 Ask For Previous Project Feedback And References

Once you’ve narrowed down the offshore PHP web development company or individual to those with suitable skills get client testimonials. Ask for details of previous clients and contact them for feedback on PHP projects. You’ll learn a lot from their experience working with the company or developer. If former clients were happy with their style of working and communication you will be too.

The tips above should point you in the right direction when it comes to hiring a good offshore PHP web development company or individual. The potential cost savings certainly make this a route worth considering. But do your research before committing to an offshore development service. You want to make sure your offshore partner can deliver your PHP project on time, budget and with minimal problems

I founded Echo back in 2013 based on my three passions: engineering, marketing, and HR. As a company CEO, it is always hard for me to make time for writing. However, I like sharing my experience with people around.

These are great tips. I personally always go with a freelancer rather than a company. I feel it’s best to hand pick a person rather than get a random person from a company. Yeah I’m sure some companies would let me hand pick, but then there’s only a select few to choose from. With freelance workers, it’s better because the world is so full of them and there is much to look into.

Useful tips! I definitely agree it’s necessary to verify the level of professionality of developer and his/her experiences. I would add that for those who never outsourced before would be useful to start with some small less important project or a part of project. The chosen developer could prove his experiences and both sides can find out if this type of cooperation is a good way to the future bigger projects (or the whole project). We have wrote something about that there If you would like to read our point of view. But you describe the “selection process” and thats… Read more »
