Questions and Answers related to Raspberry Pi Development

What is the coolest thing you’ve done with a Raspberry Pi?
“I built an outdoor lighting control system and programmed it with Java. The Raspberry Pi is connected to 4 motion sensors on all 4 sides of the house and to a solid state relay that controls the lights. The code checks sunset and sunrise using a REST Web Service and during the daylight hours everything is off. For the first 3 hours after sunset the lights are on and through the rest of the nighttime hours the lights are triggered by the motion control sensors. Sunrise and sunset varies a lot in Sweden due to time of the year.”
Which is the best OS for Raspberry Pi B+?
“Best one is clearly RISC OS, the most useful one is clearly Raspian. RISC OS is a wimp system from Acorn, the makers of the ARM cpu and early RISC workstation home computers, I had a few and I have never loved a machine like I loved my Arkie. Wonderful system. I could do things on it in 1991 that I still can’t do on a modern computer as easily. Really loved it. But the most useful is Raspbian. Most development happens there, the benefit of being a debian system, Linux.”
What is a good first project with a Raspberry Pi or a good tutorial to follow?
“You can do a plenty of projects and you can find many communities on the internet and well-structured and pretty didactical tutorials to deep dive on it (I’ll recommend some of them for you). However, before everything else, the first project should be to learn how manipulate the Raspberry itself. It’s almost a plug-and-play depending on what you have…”
What can be done with a Raspberry Pi but not with an Arduino?
“Apart from processor speed and memory size, an Arduino is capable of anything a Raspbery Pi is (and vice-versa). however you would need to spend a lot of money on Arduino shields to get SD storage, four USB ports, a keyboard, mouse, HDMI screen and a camera interface. You would have to research and include a lot of third party libraries to get multi-tasking and other facilities that Linux gives you. As a result, a program of any great complexity would be harder to program on the Arduino…”
