Discover the Benefits of Dedicated Ukrainian Developers

One of the main challenges for IT companies and start-ups is not a lack of ideas or funding but a shortage of skilled developers. As the demand for software engineers and IT professionals grows year on year companies are experiencing difficulties recruiting the staff they need to grow. This is particularly acute in developed countries like the US, UK, Israel and Northern Europe. Even if the talent can be found the salary demanded may be difficult for the company to fund, particularly at the beginning of a start-up. Companies are starting to look farther afield for talent on a project or dedicated basis. Many are discovering the enormous benefits of hiring a dedicated developer from the Ukraine.

Strong Skills, Lower Salaries
Ukraine is estimated to have over quarter of a million IT specialists. This arises from the strong science and technology training during the Soviet era. Ukraine has one of the largest number of graduates of any country in the world and their vendor certifications are in the top 5 in the world from companies such as Microsoft, Adobe and Cisco. These graduates often have excellent language skills in English, French and German along with their computer skills. This enormous pool of talented developers has largely been untapped till now as companies have outsourced to countries like India and China.

Many US and European companies are embracing the nearshoring concept for IT outsourcing. Working with developers from a similar cultural background and within similar working time zones has many advantages over dealing with companies in India. As Ukraine is not a member of the EU these IT professionals are often forced to remain in the Ukraine causing the salaries to remain low. On average a skilled and certified Ukrainian developer will cost at less 50% less than the equivalent in the US or Western Europe. This provides a huge opportunity to hire developers on an ongoing basis at a lower cost.

Dedicated Developer Teams
Many US and Western European companies are turning to a dedicated developer team outsourcing model. This allows a business to hire a team to work like an in-house development team but with lower costs and more flexibility. This model has been particularly successful with agile software development projects.

Many software development companies in the Ukraine now offers services to help choose and manage these dedicated developer teams and offer specialized support:

  • Maintain recruitment databases of available candidates
  • Recruit, test and interview prospective candidates based on your requirements
  • Keep certifications and skills up-to-date
  • Provide offices with the necessary facilities and infrastructure to allow the developers to work effectively and securely on your data
  • Deal with all legal and tax requirements for the dedicated developer in the Ukraine
  • Employ team leaders to manage the developers and project tasks day to day
  • Provide project management systems to ensure real-time communication and collaboration between your employees and your “virtual employees” in the Ukraine.

Already, large global players like Samsung, Siemens, Gameloft and Abbyy have built R&D centers in the Ukraine to take advantage of the skilled workforce and lower costs. By hiring your own team of dedicated developers any company can copy their success.

I was thinking the same thing. I cannot believe there are that many developers in the country. That must really drive the prices down for the same amount of work, don't you think?

The market of IT services in Ukraine is fast-growing and highly competitive. This is one of the reasons why prices here are lower then average around Europe. The second reason is the cost of living in Ukraine, which is also dramatically lower than the average around Europe.

I had no idea there was such a large number of people in Ukraine who specialize in IT developing; that is very impressive. There is definitely a lot to be said for outsourcing. Thanks so much for all of the information to help while I am searching.

Over quarter of a million IT specialists?! I didn't realize that and that really has me thinking about going that route for my new site. Where would you recommend I look? I have an ecommerce site that I would need around 100 pages of products.

I agree with Carla that cost is a factor in any outsourcing of work. Be in coders, designers or graphic artist there has to be a saving in cost otherwise it would be as easy to use someone local. The idea of using Ukrainian coders is new to me and I need to spend some more time reading post on this blog to get a better idea of what they can handle and cost to do so. I like the idea of using a company that hires them and you pay the company.

I have to agree with Josh on the idea that using Ukrainian developers could be better than going to the far east. Cost is a major concern for all of us and we all want to increase our margins. Not sure what Marina means by saying "the financial issue is not the most important." The financial issue is the key here. The major reason to go off shore is to save money. Obviously some developers have started with nothing, but the ones that succeeded did all they could be effective and to cut costs.

This article is very accurate in stating that the financial issue is not the most important. Indeed, if you look to history we can see that a lot of successful computer developers started their path literally with nothing. In the garage at home without any special equipment and funding. And only then thanks to their talent and ability, they were able to climb a few levels higher.

I have to admit, I had never really considered hiring a Ukrainian developer before. But this article makes a strong argument to do so. I like the lower cost and hiring a Ukrainian as opposed to someone in Asia might eliminate some of the intercultural communication problems. My only concern right now might be the political situation there.

Thank you for showing your interest in hiring ukrainian developers and our company for instance. As for your concern, though Ukraine experiences not the best political situation now, Lviv, the city where our company is based, is situated in the country's west part and it is developing in the same pace as usual.
